EGGS

Empowering Generations of Girls in Stem

Little kids are ambitious and interested in the idea of becoming part of the STEM community.

So, it is our mission to reach out to them (especially young girls) and showcase how fun and interesting science can be. Another important part of EGGS is raising awareness in boys so that to ensure that they aren't gender biased.

Upcoming Events/Plans

  • Elephant toothpaste experiment with MS students

  • Egg drop with elementary school students (4th - 5th grade)

  • 5 day period of talking to and exploring different STEM topics with MS girls

  • Junior Breakthrough challenge (Khan Academy): help them explain a science topic or concept in a 3 minute video- MS girls (13 and above)

The long term goal of EGGS is to become a larger club, explore STEM, and educate elementary school students about all of the different career paths it can lead to.

Information

Inventions that women have made are often overlooked and job opportunities are given to men more than they are to women.

ASIJ computer science classes tend to have more men than women, as is the case in many schools.

In society, when the word 'scientist' comes to mind people generally think of men.

However, women have made some really important discoveries in STEM but are not talked about as much because of their gender.

Only 30% of scientists are women, and many face discouragement because of the social stigma and sexism surrounding the STEM field.

(Erina Zhang & Risa Bernier & Nadia Qazi, all ASIJ '24, initiated EGGS at the end of 2020.)
